SHARDS OF ILLUSION
PRESS RELEASE
A.P.E. Gallery is pleased to present Mark Guglielmo: Photomontages curated by Gordon Thorne and Lisa Thompson.
A native New Yorker, Guglielmo started taking pictures in 1982 at the age of 12 with a Kodak Instamatic he purchased with profits from his paper route. Transfixed by the magic of making images, he studied photography at Hastings High School and Haverford College, often sneaking into the darkroom on weekends and after hours to hone his craft. Initially inspired by David Hockney’s Pearblossom Hwy, he’s been working with photo-collage for twenty-five years.
Guglielmo states, “Reality is subjective. Held together by fragments of memory stored in the depths of our unconscious, it can be shattered at the slightest provocation. This series of photomontages examines this fragility, an essential aspect of the human condition. I use a traditional film camera and 5” x 7” doubles from negatives as raw materials. My process is simple. Like a child on the floor with a jigsaw puzzle in hand, I cut, tape, layer, and shape images of the physical world to assemble my truth, to explore universal truth, and to create a way of seeing the unseen.“
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Northampton Arts Council, Inc.
